The only known Filipino traditional martial art of self -defence. Its roots run deep in the culture and history of the Filipino people. The exact date of its origin, however, remains undetermined. Traces of history tell that this manly art of self-defence - with the use of two sticks, or with a stick and a dagger or other blunt instruments - no doubt, had existed long before the arrival of the first Spanish colonizers in the country. Arnis is as old as the Philippines. To the Filipino it is part of his culture and temperament. Often it was indulged in as a form of recreation. Filipinos learned it together with reading, writing, religion, and Sanskrit. It was not, at the time, purely fencing, as we now regard that term. With the enthusiasm which Arnis or Eskrima is now getting, the time will not be too far that this art of stick fighting shall become a truly Filipino contribution to the widely known martial arts of Asia and the rest of the world variations in the form of dance and combative art known as sayaw or sinulog, which was both artistic and entertaining.
